This preconference is designed to provide the third and final part of a core curriculum process developed by the Air Medical Physician Association that is relevant to the success of physicians managing critical care air transport teams. Topics are selected from Principles & Direction of Air Medical Transport and represent all aspects of air medical transport relative to the physician medical director. Attendees need not take parts of the curriculum in consecutive order.
Educational Objectives: At the completion of this conference participants will be able to: Discuss the progress of the development of evidence-based protocols for HEMS.. Relate through case study presentation transport considerations for high-risk patients, and those presenting with unique and challenging problems so that patient safety and best patient care are achieved. Discuss trends in air medical care through examination of current research, patient care advances, and models of transport services so that patients receive the best care possible. Examine medical director liability and legal issues including recent case studies, and current state and federal rules and regulations that impact a transport program so that the medical director provides medical direction under the best guidelines available. Recognize behaviors of stress in the flight team and describe how to initiate appropriate intervention and management recommendations to assure safety for patients and flight crewmembers. Acquire knowledge of the communications center including equipment, protocols and procedures so that the medical director is knowledgeable of this critical element of medical transport. Understand aircraft capabilities and limitations, aviation safety issues, weather minimums, and applicable regulations of the FAA and FAR Part 135 so that the medical director is knowledgeable about this mode of medical transport.
